The northwestern part of Yunnan Provice is crisscrosset with towering mountains, deep canyons and rapid rivers. The natural conditions are wild and rugged. Access is difficult due to dangerous peaks and angry torrents. In the mountains and along the rivers, living in their own secluded communities, are such Chinese minority nationalities as Pumi, Naxi, Drung, Nu, and Lisu.
