This textbook is compiled for foreigners, overseas Chinese, and students from abroad coming to China to learn spoken Chinese. The content is divided into two volumes. Vol.1 deals with everyday life. Vol.II focuses on scenic spots and historical sites, Chinese culture and arts, and traditional festivals and customs. Each lesson is made up of three parts: text, new words, and exercises. The texts are all in dialogue form and contain short sentences which can be easily assimilated and put to use. The vocabulary centers around the spoken language of daily life Vol.I employs approximately six hundred new words and Vol. II, eight hundred new words. The book was greeted with an enthusiastic reception over nine years at Beijing University and at other universities both in China and abroad. In this edition, the content has been enriched and appropriate revisions have been made in language.
